The Future of the Muslim Brotherhood: A Forward Look
This book explores the critical question of the future of Islamism—an issue of urgent concern in research and policymaking circles due to the multifaceted challenges and threats that Islamism and its associated phenomena pose at various levels: security, political, social, intellectual, and cultural. Diverse viewpoints exist regarding political Islam and its future. Some researchers believe that the phenomenon of political Islam is enduring and will not disappear in the near future—whether through gradual dissolution, sudden collapse, or transformation into intermediary forms progressing toward eventual decline. Others argue that the “death of Islamism” is its inevitable fate, particularly given the severe blows Islamist groups have suffered in recent years.
There is also a body of recent Arabic and foreign literature suggesting that the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is evolving into a broader “ideological current” in response to the conflicts the group experienced following the so-called “Arab Spring.” These conflicts have negatively impacted the MB’s influence, strength, and presence at all levels. Such academic approaches doubtlessly reflect diverse viewpoints and analytical frameworks shaped by the authors’ academic, intellectual, and civilizational contexts.
This book raises several research questions regarding the academic methodology for examining the MB: What are the dominant approaches in the literature for understanding Islamism and its trajectories? Is the “death of Islamism” its inevitable outcome? What does “death” mean in this conceptual framework? What is the difference between the “death of Islamism” and “post-Islamism” (i.e., the ability of Islamist thought to incorporate democratic concepts, especially concerning power)? Why has there been a surge in writings theorizing the transformation of the MB into a general ideological trend in response to the conflicts the group experienced following the so-called “Arab Spring,” which negatively impacted the MB’s influence, strength, and presence at all levels?
