TRENDS, Japan’s MRI Discuss Future of Think Tanks and Their Role in Rapidly Changing World
The session explored the importance of international cooperation in knowledge production and in supporting evidence-based decision-making.TRENDS Global, part of the TRENDS Group, welcomed a delegation led by Mr. Takashi Morisaki, Chairman of the Board of the Mitsubishi Research Institute (MRI), Japan, to its Abu Dhabi headquarters for a high-level dialogue on the future of think tanks and their evolving role in an increasingly dynamic global landscape.
The session explored the importance of international cooperation in knowledge production and its role in supporting evidence-based decision-making amid accelerating global transformations. Discussions also highlighted opportunities to strengthen collaboration between research institutions, exchange expertise, and develop innovative approaches to addressing emerging global challenges.
The session focused on several strategic themes, most notably the role of research institutions in anticipating future trends, generating strategic insights, and addressing today’s economic, technological, and geopolitical challenges. Discussions also examined the transformative role of technology and the integration of artificial intelligence in advancing scientific research, enhancing analytical capabilities, and developing innovative tools to support evidence-based policymaking.
During the session, Mr. Morisaki stressed that cooperation among think tanks and international research institutions is no longer merely an option but an urgent necessity for addressing increasingly complex global challenges that require multidimensional perspectives, innovative solutions, and collaborative approaches.
He said that building international knowledge cooperation networks enhances the quality of research and increases the effectiveness of its outputs. It also strengthens research institutions’ ability to provide practical, actionable, and evidence-based recommendations to decision-makers.
He explained that the MRI considers international partnerships a strategic priority, viewing them as a vital means of exchanging expertise, advancing knowledge, and fostering innovation in technology, economics, and sustainable development.
