TRENDS Study: AI Strengthens National Resilience and Anticipates Maritime Crises

Senior Researcher Sarah Al Muhairi: Predictive analytics has become a strategic necessity for safeguarding national security and securing maritime waterways.

A new research study published by TRENDS Research & Advisory has affirmed that artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics constitute a strategic pillar for enhancing national resilience and strengthening states’ ability to anticipate and detect geopolitical and security risks before they escalate into complex crises. This, the study notes, significantly improves proactive response capabilities and supports informed decision-making.

Sarah Al Muhairi, Senior Researcher at TRENDS and author of the study, stated that the rapidly evolving regional and international security landscape requires countries to adopt advanced technological solutions, foremost among them AI technologies, to reinforce strategic stability, enhance preparedness, and build systems that are more resilient and adaptable to emerging challenges and future threats.

The Strait of Hormuz as a Case Study

The study focuses on potential geopolitical disruption scenarios affecting critical maritime chokepoints, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically significant routes for global trade and energy supplies. It highlights that AI-powered algorithms provide sophisticated tools for analyzing maritime, geospatial, and operational data in real time, thereby enabling early preparedness for potential crises.

According to the study, these technologies facilitate risk forecasting, identify indicators of threats to maritime navigation, and assess the likelihood of escalating tensions before they materialize, giving decision-makers valuable time to implement preventive measures.

The study also explains that AI can simulate the impact of potential disruptions or closures of strategic maritime passages and recommend alternative routes for commercial shipping and energy transport. Such capabilities help ensure the continuity of global supply chains while mitigating potential economic consequences.

Furthermore, the study emphasizes that AI-driven predictive analytics equips policymakers with accurate insights and supports the development of effective response scenarios, thereby contributing to crisis containment and reducing their security, economic, and geopolitical repercussions.

A Pillar of National Security

The study stresses that artificial intelligence has evolved beyond being merely a tool for improving operational efficiency to become a fundamental component of national security and crisis management systems. It argues that countries investing in robust digital infrastructure and integrating AI applications into their national strategies will be better positioned to navigate sudden geopolitical shifts, strengthen national security, protect economic interests, and promote sustainable development.

The study concludes that investment in artificial intelligence is no longer simply a technological option but a strategic imperative for improving risk prediction capabilities and building more resilient national systems that are better prepared to confront future challenges.
