The Dubai branch of TRENDS Group hosted H.E. Ou Boqian, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Dubai, for a dialogue session exploring the evolving role of research institutions and think tanks as key contributors to shaping the future of international relations and trusted sources of strategic insight into regional and global developments.
The discussion highlighted how leading think tanks are increasingly moving beyond traditional research to generate foresight knowledge that helps anticipate emerging challenges and opportunities.
The session took place against a backdrop of rapidly evolving geopolitical and economic dynamics, with discussions focusing on opportunities for research collaboration, the application of artificial intelligence to advance knowledge creation, and the development of accredited training programs designed to equip the next generation of researchers.
The session, which brought together several experts and researchers, also explored ways to maximize the value of TRENDS’ research, advisory, and training capabilities. Participants highlighted TRENDS’ efforts in data analysis, strategic reporting, and the integration of diverse scientific methodologies, thereby creating a distinctive and innovative research model.
Understanding Regional Transformations
H.E. Ou Boqian expressed her appreciation for the high level of intellectual exchange during the session, stressing that China views research institutions and think tanks in the region as trusted partners in understanding developments across the Middle East and beyond.
She noted that the meeting reflected the Consulate’s commitment to deepening scientific and academic cooperation through practical partnerships that generate actionable knowledge. She added that TRENDS has emerged as a distinguished model for bridging academic research and executive advisory services, aligning with China’s vision of think tanks as platforms for intellectual dialogue, cultural understanding, and knowledge exchange.
Boqian also expressed her hope that the meeting would serve as a launching point for regular researcher and expert exchange programs, as well as joint research projects in areas such as food security, supply chains, smart cities, advanced technologies, and energy security. She highlighted TRENDS’ ability to translate ambitious ideas into practical and implementable initiatives.
Tools for Future-Oriented Analysis
Ali Abdulla Al Ali, Director of the Dubai Branch of TRENDS, stated that the meeting reflects TRENDS’ vision of transforming think tanks from advisory institutions into active partners in shaping the future through knowledge and foresight. He noted that the discussions addressed ways to leverage Chinese expertise in fields such as the digital economy and clean energy, while also preparing a new generation of researchers capable of mastering the tools of future-oriented analysis through rigorous scientific methodologies.
Al Ali added that the session came only days after TRENDS participated in the UAE Pavilion at the 32nd Beijing International Book Fair 2026, underscoring the depth of the research, academic, and knowledge ties between the two sides and their important role in advancing global intellectual dialogue.
